Hai Phong lies on the axis of important road, rail, and seaways nationwide and international. It has seaports, airports, and a synchronous network of roadway transport.

Roadways: Hai Phong’s roadway transport is rather convenient to freight goods between Hai Phong and Ha Noi, northern provinces through National Roads 5, 10 and new Ha Noi – Hai Phong Expressway. National Road 5 joins National Road 1, thereby carrying goods from Hai Phong to border provinces of Lang Son (220km), Lao Cai (310km) or to Ha Noi (102km), then Ho Chi Minh City (1,618km). The Ha Noi – Hai Phong Expressway is the first and the most modern expressway in the northern Vietnam. The 105.5km-long, six-lane highway begins at the Belt Road 3 in Ha Noi and ends at Dinh Vu port in Hai Phong. This road not only helps to reduce the time traveling between Hai Phong – Ha Noi from 2.5 hours to 1 hour but also enhances the connectivity of northern economic region, as well as increases its efficiency by boosting the socioeconomic development of the region.

Waterways: Hai Phong Port is now the biggest one in the northern region and the second seaport in the country after the port of Ho Chi Minh city, it has the capacity to handle 20,000DWT vessels. 90% of cargo volumes in the northern region are carried through Hai Phong Port. However, Lach Huyen International Gateway Port, which is under construction off the coast of Haiphong, will be the largest port in the northern of Vietnam upon completion in 2018. It is the first public-private partnership (PPP) project between the governments of Vietnam and Japan. The entire construction is divided into two components, A and B.Component A involves the construction of port infrastructure, component B will oversee the construction of two 750m-long container berths with the capacity to handle 100,000DWT vessels.

Railways: Hai Phong-Ha Noi-Lao Cai Rail Route and Hai Phong-Ha Noi-Lang Son is convenient to carry goods domestically. Hai Phong-Ha Noi Rail Route contributes importantly to the railway network leading to Ho Chi Minh City.

Airways: Cat Bi International Airport, a major one of Hai Phong City, is 5km away from the center of the city, and can accommodate Boeing B747, B777, Airbus 321 and airplanes with the same tonnage of those. Beside domestic flights, the airport now opens direct international flights to Bangkok, Seoul (September 2016). In the future, it plans to open flight routes to Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

By the agency of advanced telcommunacations network, Hai Phong supplies users with domestic and overseas telecommunications services such as phone services, card phone, fax, mobile, prepayment service, e-mail, and internet service.
