Borders

North bordering Nghe An, Quang Binh province on the south, the west by the provinces of Khammouane Province Borikhamxay and Laos, to the east the East China Sea.

Climate

Ha Tinh Province is located in the tropical monsoon region. The province is influenced by climatic transition of The North and South with typical tropical climate of The South, so the weather is extreme. Ha Tinh province’s climate is divided into two seasons: dry and rainy season.

The average temperature between winter and summer is different. In winter, it is from 180C to 22 0C. In summer, it is from 15.50C to 33 0C.

The Rainy season lasts from August to November. Annually, the average rainfall is from 2.500mm to 2.650mm, accounting for 54% of the whole year’s. The dry season is from December to July next year. The weather is dry, hot and highly vaporizing West- Southern wind (blowing from Laos).

From July to October, there are many storms with heavy rains caused floods in many areas. In the winter, it has northeast monsoon so the climate is very cold and drizzly, and the temperature may be down to 7 0C.

Located in the largest rainfall region and affected by the storm, Ha Tinh’s climate is distinctive from other regions’. This can be illustrated by the extreme cold weather in winter.

The day and night temperature’s amplitude fluctuation is about 6.20C. The average number of sunshine hours is about 1800. The average amount of cloud is about 70-80%. The average humidity is very high, reaching 84-86%. The difference of the average moisture between the wettest and the driest month reach 18-19%.

Ha Tinh Province is influenced by many storms (about 5 to 6 hurricanes per year). Wind speed can reach 30 m/s in the mountainous areas and 40 m/s in the delta areas.

Natural Resources

Forest resource: Ha Tinh has strengths on economic development of forests that cover 365,577 ha, of which 299,603 ha have been afforested and 65,974 ha have not been covered, so far. There are over 86 species and 500 kinds of wood, including specious wood such as ironwood, bassia, teak, sindora, pamu, and rare animals such as antelopes, tigers, cheetahs, black deer, goats, pheasants, lophuras, and species of reptile. Furthermore, a 52,882ha Vu Quang National Park and a 21,759ha Ke Go Natural Reserve may be used as an interesting ecological tourist area.

Sea resource: Ha Tinh coast stretches 137 km, and its water coverage is 18,000 square kilometers that are home to 267 species of fish, 60 of which are rather valuable to economy, and over 20 kinds of shrimps. Thus, the fishing ground is comfortable to catch and process seafood.

The coast is endowed with fine sand beaches, backed by mountains, of Xuan Thanh, Chan Tien, Thach Hai, Thien Cam, Ky Ninh, and Deo Con… They are potential tourist areas that have been planned and are ready to call on investors who want to pump their money into their investment projects.

Mineral resources: There are types of minerals such as titan, gold, manganese, tin, granite rock, and mineral water. Thach Khe Iron Mine with deposits of 540 million tons, the biggest iron mine in South East Asia, makes up 60% of national reserve. Its content is between 61.39 and 62.38%. Titan has deposits of over 5.3 million tons. Granite rock at some 1 billion m3 is used for high quality projects. Mineral hot water with 76oC that has mean discharge of over 400 m3 a day is located near a 30,000ha special use forest, which makes it possible for investors to tap and set up ecological tourist areas.

Scenic areas including the famous La River, Vu Mon Falls, Vu Quang Garden, Ke Hu, Kim Son hot springs, Deo Ngang pass, Huong Tich Pagoda, and the beautiful beaches in Thien Cam, Deo son and Xuan Thanh, Tien Chan... Most of them are along Highway 1A and 8.

Transportation

Ha Tinh has 5 routes of crossing national roads with 383 km total length comprising national Road 1, Ho Chi Minh Road, rail way, National Road 8 connecting Hong Linh Town with Laos and Thailand at Cau Treo Border Gate, National Road 12A connecting Vung A Economic Park with Northeast Thailand at Chalo Border Gate. Ha Tinh, a big gateway, with strengths of East-West Economic Corridor, directly influences the route of Laos and Northeast Thai.

Ha Tinh is endowed with Vung Ang Port, which receives 500 tonnage vessels, and Son Dung Deep Water Port, which receives 30,000 tonnage vessels, and Xuan Hai Port doing 3,000 tonnage vessels, which keeps it potential to build up sea ports.

As regards airway, an airport is some 50 km and 100 km away from Ha Tinh and Vung Ang Economic Park respectively. In addition, another airport in Dong Hoi, Quang Binh Province serves domestic flights to Ho Chi Minh City or to Ha Noi.

Water Supply

Abundant surface water comes from a network of rivers, canals, damps. There are 3 rivers, big and small, 266 lakes, and 15 damps at total volume of 1,600 million m3 . To date, big irrigational works have been built up to provide water for production and life.

Electric Supply

National grids of 110V, 220V, and 500V run across Ha Tinh. In Vung Ang Economic Park, the Government planned a thermo-electronic cluster at capacity of 4,800 MW, of which 1,200 MW will be finished by 2012 by Vietnam Electricity Group. Vung Ang 2 thermo-electronic plant will get started.
